A geothermal stop is one of the most popular additions to a Golden Circle itinerary, and for good reason.

Along the route, visitors can choose between historic pools, modern lagoons, natural hot springs, and geothermal rivers. There is no single “best” choice. Each location has its own character, setting, and approach to geothermal bathing.

This guide covers the best geothermal pools, hot springs, lagoons, and bathing areas on and near the Golden Circle, helping you compare the different options and choose the one that best fits your trip.

Overview: Geothermal Pools on the Golden Circle

Best easy-access pool: Secret Lagoon & Fontana
Best modern spa: Laugarás Lagoon
Best quiet natural spring: Hrunalaug
Best natural experience: Reykjadalur hot river
Best overall balance: Secret Lagoon

Best Geothermal Pools & Hot Springs on the Golden Circle

Secret Lagoon (Old Pool)

Type: Natural-style pool (developed)
Access: Very easy (parking on site)
Facilities: Changing rooms, showers, café
Entry fee: Yes

The Secret Lagoon is one of the oldest swimming pools in Iceland and remains one of the most popular geothermal bathing stops along the Golden Circle.

Unlike many modern lagoon developments, Secret Lagoon remains relatively simple. Steam rises from the surrounding geothermal area, and small hot springs bubble nearby, creating a setting that feels closer to Iceland’s traditional bathing culture.

In our view, Secret Lagoon combines a more natural setting with the convenience of modern facilities. It feels less developed than many larger spa destinations while still providing everything needed for a comfortable visit.

Best for:
first-time visitors
traditional geothermal bathing
easy access
relaxing after the Golden Circle

Tip: Secret Lagoon works particularly well as the final stop of the day. Arriving after Gullfoss often feels far more rewarding than starting your Golden Circle trip in a hot pool.

Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon

Laugarvatn Fontana

Type: Spa / geothermal baths
Access: Very easy
Facilities: Full spa facilities, café, changing rooms
Entry fee: Yes

Located on the shores of Lake Laugarvatn, Fontana combines geothermal pools, steam baths, and direct lake access.

Compared to Secret Lagoon, Fontana offers a broader range of facilities. Visitors can move between pools, steam rooms, and the lake itself rather than simply soaking in one geothermal pool.

The lakeside setting gives Fontana a noticeably different atmosphere from many other geothermal facilities in Iceland.

Best for:
spa facilities
wellness experiences
lake bathing
short stop between Þingvellir and Geysir

Tip: Fontana is one of the easiest geothermal stops to fit naturally into a Golden Circle itinerary because it sits directly along the route between Þingvellir and Geysir.

Laugarás Lagoon

Type: Geothermal lagoon
Access: Very easy
Facilities: Full visitor facilities, restaurant, changing rooms
Entry fee: Yes

Despite being one of the newest geothermal destinations near the Golden Circle, Laugarás Lagoon frequently provides a calmer experience than many of Iceland’s larger lagoon developments.

Modern design, river views, and high-quality facilities create a setting that sits somewhere between a traditional swimming pool and a destination spa.

Best for:
modern lagoon experience
couples
premium facilities
relaxation and dining

Tip: If you are looking for a more upscale geothermal experience without the crowds often associated with Iceland’s largest lagoons, Laugarás Lagoon is one of the best options near the Golden Circle.

Hrunalaug

Type: Natural hot spring
Access: Short walk from parking
Facilities: New facilities in 2026
Entry fee: Yes

Hrunalaug is a small geothermal spring located in open countryside near Flúðir.

The pool is small, the setting is rural, and the focus is on the natural surroundings rather than facilities or spa services.

That simplicity is exactly what draws people to Hrunalaug.

At the same time, it bears little resemblance to Iceland’s larger geothermal spas and lagoons.

Best for:
natural surroundings
smaller crowds
short visits
traditional hot spring atmosphere

Tip: Because the pool is relatively small, Hrunalaug is usually at its best during quieter periods rather than peak midday hours.

Reykjadalur Hot River

Type: Natural geothermal river
Access: 3 km hike (45–60 minutes one way)
Facilities: Very limited (no showers or toilets; changing outdoors)
Entry fee: Free

If we had to choose the most unique geothermal experience near the Golden Circle, Reykjadalur would probably be our pick.

Unlike every other location in this guide, Reykjadalur is not simply a pool or lagoon. Reaching the bathing area requires a moderate hike through a geothermal valley filled with steam vents, hot springs, and colorful hillsides.

At the end of the trail, visitors can bathe in a naturally heated river surrounded by geothermal landscapes.

The hike makes Reykjadalur a more demanding option than the other locations in this guide, but it also delivers one of the most distinctive geothermal experiences in Iceland.

Best for:
adventure
hiking
nature lovers
natural geothermal bathing

Our tip: Bring a swimsuit and towel. It sounds obvious, but many visitors arrive at the river only to realize they left one or both behind.

Our take

If we could only choose one geothermal stop after a day on the Golden Circle, Secret Lagoon would probably be our pick. It combines easy access, a traditional setting, and enough facilities to remain comfortable without feeling overly polished or commercial.

Reykjadalur would be our second choice, but for a very different reason. Bathing in the naturally heated river after the hike feels especially rewarding.
