This guide explains how driving times and distances work on the Golden Circle, helping you plan a smooth and realistic day trip from Reykjavík.

What this article covers
  • Total route distance and driving time: how long the full loop takes with and without stops.
  • Driving times between key stops: Reykjavík, Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, and return.
  • Route options: clockwise vs reverse and how they affect timing and crowds.
  • Seasonal differences: how weather, daylight, and winter conditions impact travel time.
  • Road conditions: what to expect from Route 36, 37, and 35 throughout the year.
Key takeaways
  • Driving time (no stops): ~3.5–4 hours
  • Typical trip: 6–8 hours with stops
  • Best start time: before 09:00
  • Winter: allow extra time for conditions

The Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s most convenient day trips from Reykjavík, but the total time required varies more than many people expect. Weather, traffic, meal stops, and optional detours can easily add several hours to the day.

Driving is only part of the day. A full Golden Circle trip includes time at attractions, restaurants, cafés, and optional stops, not just time behind the wheel.

This Golden Circle Driving Times and Distances guide explains driving times between major stops, overall distances, seasonal considerations, and how long a typical Golden Circle day really takes.

Overview: Golden Circle Driving

Total distance: 230–300 km depending on route and stops
Total driving time: 3.5–4 hours without stops
Typical trip duration: 6–8 hours
Road type: Fully paved main route

All driving times and suggested stop durations should be treated as estimates rather than exact figures.

Golden Circle Route Overview

The standard Golden Circle route follows:

Reykjavík → Þingvellir → Geysir → Gullfoss → back to Reykjavík

Most people drive clockwise, but the route can be completed in either direction.

The route itself is easy to follow, but travel times can vary noticeably depending on traffic, weather, and how many stops are added along the way.

Tip: Fueling up before leaving Reykjavík and bringing snacks usually makes the drive more relaxed.

Golden Circle Route Options: Clockwise vs Reverse

The Golden Circle can be driven both clockwise and counterclockwise.

Route Options
Clockwise (most common):
Reykjavík → Þingvellir → Geysir → Gullfoss
Reverse route:
Reykjavík → Gullfoss → Geysir → Þingvellir

Driving times remain almost identical in both directions. What changes is when you reach the busiest attractions and restaurants throughout the day.

In our view, the classic clockwise route works best for most visitors because it follows the traditional order of the Golden Circle’s main attractions.

Golden Circle Stops Find out More
Reverse Route Benefits
you leave Reykjavík later in the morning
you visit during peak summer season
you want to avoid some of the busiest midday crowds around Geysir and Gullfoss

Golden Circle Clockwise: Driving Times Between Main Stops

Reykjavík → Þingvellir National Park
Distance: ~45 km
Driving time: 45–60 minutes

This first section leaves Reykjavík behind and gradually opens into farmland, lava fields, and wider countryside landscapes. Traffic becomes noticeably lighter once the capital area is behind you.

Þingvellir → Geysir Geothermal Area
Distance: ~60 km
Driving time: 45–55 minutes

The route continues from Þingvellir along Routes 365 and 37, passing through the Laugarvatn area before reaching Geysir in the geothermal region of Haukadalur.

Tip: On the way to Geysir, stopping briefly at Efstidalur dairy farm for ice cream is an easy detour that fits naturally into the drive.

Geysir → Gullfoss Waterfall
Distance: ~10 km
Driving time: 10–15 minutes

At just 10–15 minutes, this is by far the shortest drive of the day.

Gullfoss → Reykjavík (Route 35 & Route 1)
Distance: ~110–120 km
Driving time: 1.5–2 hours

This is the longest uninterrupted drive of the day unless additional stops are added on the return journey to Reykjavík.

Traffic can slow the final approach to Reykjavík in the late afternoon and early evening, particularly in summer.
